Print This Page Compensation Paid Out to Vietnamese Fish Farmers
VIET NAM - Two companies in the southern province of Dong Nai’s Dinh Quan District have agreed to pay out VND1.7 billion (US$95,000) to compensate 27 fish farmers whose stocks were killed by industrial effluent.
The lion’s share of the compensation, VND1.4 billion, will come from Mauri La Nga Foodstuff Fermentation Co. while the balance will be paid by La Nga Cane and Sugarcane Joint Stock Co, reports H. Dung of Thahn Nien News.
All the 27 farmers in Phu Ngoc Commune are expected to receive their money today.
The companies announced their compensation agreement at a meeting with district and provincial authorities on Thursday.
The farmers’ story dates back to March and April 2008, when nearly 300 tons of fish they were raising in netted cages in the La Nga River inexplicably died, causing an estimated loss of VND7 billion ($393,900).
