Spain Leads Farmed Fish Output in Europe

Total farmed fish output reached 290,000 tonnes in Spain last year. In terms of revenue, aquaculture generated around EUR 450 million in 2007, JACUMAR data reveals.

According to FIS, seventy-eight per cent of the total corresponded to molluscs (mainly mussels, oysters, clams and cockles) and the remaining 22 per cent to fish, among which seabream, European seabass, turbot, rainbow trout and tuna stood out.

This information and the latest statistics drafted by EUROSTAT in 2006 put Spain at the top of the 27 Member-states of the European Union (EU) as far as farmed fish output. Next in line are Denmark, France and the United Kingdom, reports FIS.
