IRELAND - Two to three portions of fatty fish eaten weekly could help stave off progression of the age-related eye disease, macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness in Ireland.
Research is based on findings on almost 3,000 people, all of whom were taking part in a supplements trial, the Age-Related Eye Disease Study, reports Independent.
According to the news organisation, they were monitored for the development of age- related macular degeneration over eight years.
Age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, is a progressive degenerative condition, which affects the back of the eye (macula). It robs people of the capacity to see fine detail, and eventually blinds them.
It is becoming much more common as the proportion of elderly in the world's population is steadily increasing.
