Malaysia Sets 507,558 Tonne Production Target
The deputy minister of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim told Bernama that the Perak region would account for 137,400 tonnes of aquaculture products from four high impact projects and Aquaculture Industrial Zone (AIZ) totalling 2,556 hectares.
"One of the areas identified is Tasik Temengor with a targeted production of 40,000 metric tonnes a year by 2013, through fish breeding activities," said she told the agency.
She added that a company - Trapia Malaysia Sdn Bhd (a joint-venture between Malaysia and Norway) and based in Norway, GenoMar AS - had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Perak state government through the Perak State Development Corporation to breed Tilapia fresh water fish at Tasik Temengor.
The company has been researching in a number of countries including Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, China and will also continue research in Kedah, Pahang, Terengganu, Johor and Perak.
