Print This Page £200,000 Salmon Lost From Farm in Boat Crash
UK - More than 12,000 live salmon worth £200,000 were lost at a Hebridean fish farm when a Norwegian boat crashed into a fish pen.
According to FishFarming Xpert, the incident happened in Loch Boisdale, South Uist, at the Marine Harvest farm at Marulaig Bay on Sunday morning, the Aberden Press and Journal wrote.
Staff were preparing to set up fish ready for collection by the Ronja Commander well boat, operated by Solvtrans, based in Alesund, Norway. The well boat had been instructed to stay clear of the pens until the fish were prepared for collecting and transporting to Mallaig for slaughter, say Fish Farming Xpert.
The boat, which was travelling at 2-3 knots, collided with a plastic pen, ripping the net. Assisted by the crew on the well boat, the staff at the farm took immediate action to minimise the loss of salmon in the pen.
