AUSTRALIA - C is calling for public feedback on the Draft Queensland Fisheries Strategy 2009-2014.

The draft strategy represents an overarching framework to support the future management of fisheries, aquaculture and fish habitat and outlines a vision for the management of Queensland´s fisheries resources over the next five years.

Fishing is integral to Queensland's lifestyle and economy. It is part of what makes us a strong and green state.

Every year in Queensland almost a million people fish for a living, for recreation, or for traditional and customary purposes. Countless others rely on sustainable fisheries as the focus of tourism and other businesses. But there are major challenges ahead for fishing.

"Our fisheries resources are finite and under significant stress. Challenges include potential for overfishing, increasing consumer demand for fisheries products, coastal development, the effects of climate change, biosecurity risks and diminishing commercial profitability," said Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries spokesman.
