AUSTRALIA - An aquaculture research and development centre in Western Australia will soon be helping the nation's fish farmers keep their stocks alive and healthy.

According to ABC Rural, experts say that with wild stocks declining, aquaculture is the only way to meet the surging global demand for protein.

The new centre, in Geraldton, about 500 kilometres north of Perth, will concentrate on marine aquaculture, raising fish in cages in the ocean, reports the news organisation.

Dr Suresh Job says the research will address some of the bottlenecks, which have held up development of the industry.

"One of the major issues that's cropped up is fish health, and how we actually manage fish health," Dr Job says.
