Compass Group Point Towards Sustainable Seafood
Dr Jon Harman, development director of Seafish said: “We welcome the Compass Group’s decision to join the move towards sustainable seafood. Fish to avoid lists can serve a useful purpose as they highlight stocks that may be in trouble.
“However, this approach risks putting extra pressure on healthy fish stocks, and increases the chance that fish will be discarded due to their low commercial value combined with the ability of fishermen to avoid them when targeting sustainable species.
“Finally, we are concerned at the lack of common methodology between the many ‘fish to avoid’ lists that are currently available for consumers, and call on NGOs to work with the seafood industry on the development of a comprehensive list of fish to eat and avoid.”
The Compass Group is the world’s largest contract caterer and the move will cover 6,500 outlets including Chelsea Football Club and Bristol Zoo.
