Hawaii Aquaculture Sees Record Sales
According to Pacific Business News, algae sales made up 45 percent of the sales, at $15.7 million. Finfish sales totaled $7 million; ornamental fish, $3.3 million; and other, such as seed stock and brood stock, which is used for breeding, totaled $8.3 million, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service Hawaii field office.
The Big Island led the state in sales, accounting for 80 percent of the total with $27.8 million. The Big Island is home to the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority, where half of its tenants are aquaculture businesses that cultivate marine or freshwater fish or shellfish under controlled conditions, reports the news organisation.
Sales from Oahu, Kauai and Maui accounted for the remaining 20 percent, or $6.8 million.
