Fisheries and Aquatic Center Coming to Philippines

PHILIPPINES - In an effort to provide the people with a stable supply of fresh water fishery products to meet their protein needs through increased production, the provincial government sourced out funds for the establishment of a provincial fisheries and aquatic resources center (PFARC).

According to the Philippine government, in a memorandum of agreement signed by Governor Teddy Baguilat Jr. and Regional Director Rebecca Dang-awan of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR-CAR), P1 million was allotted by BFAR-CAR to fund the center which will soon be constructed here.

Engr. Efren Malijan, of the Provincial Agriculture Environment and Natural Resources Office (PAENRO) re said the center which has an area of two hectares, will consist of 12 units 2.5meters by 5 x.70 meters concrete tanks with shed; one unit water impoundment with rubber masonry embankment dike and drainage system and one unit water system with installation.

The lot which was bought by the provincial government for said purpose will be utilized provincewide with a training center, dormitory and a hatchery. This is the phase one of project, Malijan said.

The MOA states that it is vital that fish production be intensified to promote food security and sufficiency to mitigate the increase of hunger, provide employment and increase the profit of fisherfolk here.

On the other hand, the Provincial Local government Unit seeks to produce quality tilapia, carp and mudfish fingerlings as well as to serve as a venue for training, seminar, symposium and provide monitoring, extension and regulatory services to consumers.
