Chile's Salmon Exports Lower in First Half-Year
According to the Association of Manufacturing Development (Sofofa), Chile's exports of salmon fell 4.8 per cent the first six months of 2009 compared to 2008, reports FishFarmingXpert.
Japan, the first market in importance of this product -with near the half of the value exported during the first semester- accumulated a strong increase of 19.6 per cent. This result compensated the strong fall of the salmon exports to The United States (20.1 per cent) and Europe (39.2 per cent).
As it was expected, June showed a strong contraction of the volumes as consequence of the ISA virus. During that month, the salmon and trout exports moved back 20.6 per cent compared to June of 2008.
The report of Sofofa added that the increase of fishmeal exports was due to the reorientation to the external markets of the production that was destined to the salmon industry. This increase does not involve increases in the production.
