Philippines Oyster Output Should be Higher, Says Expert
The Philippines ranks only eighth in world oyster production despite its long shoreline, according to research.
Dr Wilfredo Yap, aquaculture consultant, made this observation yesterday in his presentation of 'Status and Prospects of Hatchery and Culture of Shellfishes' during the first National Shellfish Summit held at the Asian Fisheries Academy in Dagupan City.
The Philippine production of oyster (talaba) ranked only eighth in the world, with 20,508 metric tons produced in 2007. The country ranks 14th in mussel (tahong) production.
This is a far-cry from top producer China with its produce of 3.5 million metric tons, Dr Yap said. Considering the vast Philippine shoreline of 36,000 kilometres, he said, the Philippine production is 'very minimal'.
Oyster ranks only fourth in top aquaculture produce in the Philippines. Milkfish tops the production followed by tilapia and tiger prawn.
In the country, pangasinan ranks third in oyster production with 4,110 metric tons, which accounts for 20 per cent of the total. Region 6 is touted as the biggest producer of oyster and mussels particularly in the provinces of Capiz and Negros Occidental.
