Indonesia Struggles to Fulfil Shrimp Export Orders

INDONESIA - Indonesia is unable to meet around one-third of shrimp export orders as the result of shortages in supply from the shrimp industry.

"We have a problem with domestic shrimp cultivation so that we as exporters often face supply shortages," Shidiq Moeslim, chairman of the Indonesian National Fisheries Society, reports Antara News.

There was a shortage of raw fish supplies so that the country was now facing a problem with its fishery export target in 2009. Mr Shidiq said shrimp exports accounted for 45 per cent or about 10 trillion rupiah (IDR; US$1.03 billion) of total fishery exports, which reached US$2.6 billion per annum.

It was estimated that about IDR3 trillion worth of shrimp export deals failed to be carried out in 2009.
