Training in Prawn Farming for Fish Farmers
Inaugurating the programme, J. Daniel Jameson, Dean - in charge, FCRI, said that the training would be for a period of 15 days for 25 fish farmers from five southern districts.
Though there were about 100 freshwater prawn hatcheries across the country, the technical expertise needs to be extended to fish and prawn farmers, writes The Hindu.
Farmers should be trained intensively in the technical aspects such as feed, nutrition, disease management and water quality measures so as to boost the production rate to at least 1, 500 kg per hectare in eight months’ culture period, Dr. Jameson said.
Farmers from Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Madurai, Dindigul and Theni districts would be trained in semi-intensive and intensive farming.
Hence, 25 participants were chosen from the above districts for training purpose, he added.
M.J. Prince Jeyaseelan, Head, Department of Aquaculture spoke on the benefits of freshwater prawn farming.
Faculty members of FCRI, including R. Senthiladeban, J. Stephen Sampath Kumar, N.Felix and M.Rajakumar, would be the resource persons for the programme, the Dean in-Charge said.
