China-Uganda Aquaculture Project Launched

UGANDA - The Uganda and Chinese government have joined forces to build an agricultural technology demonstration centre at Kajjansi Aquaculture Research and Development Centre.

The centre will continue research on new fish species, offer technical training and technical demonstration of highly effective freshwater aquaculture techniques.

The centre is also designed to foster freshwater fry breeding techniques and demonstrate better fish feed processing and application, according to a report in the Ugandan Daily Monitor.

New fish species such as grasscarp, silvercarp, and bighead carp are to be introduced from China.

And the project General Manager Yi Ronggan told trhe Monitor that they also want to introduce blue tilapia for breeding, spawning and later all the species will be distributed to farmers across Uganda.

The project, being built by Sichuan Huaqiao Fenghuang group and funded by the Chinese government, will also develop and promote large-scale breeding of the Nile perch, the main species in Uganda’s waters.

The project is one of the outcomes of the Sino Africa Summit that marked 50 years of collaboration and cooperation of Africa with China.
