Kabale Farmers to Get Local Fish

10 November 2009

UGANDA - Fish farmers in Kyanamira sub-county Kabale district are to receive fish fry from the sub-county hatcheries. The hatcheries were recently restocked with parent fish that can produce over 30,000 fish fry every three months.

This was revealed by the sub-county chief, Eric Sunday, on Sunday after overseeing a fish harvest at Petrinia Basigirenda's fish farm in Nyakagera parish reports

The sub-county fisheries extension officer, Tadiuso Zabwe, said the hatcheries had the capacity to satisfy all the fish farmers in the sub-county.

He added that the market for fish was growing bigger everyday. Ms Basigirenda's pond is 50ft by 100ft with a capacity of 20,000 fish. She rears tilapia, carp and mud fish.

Some of the fish caught in the pond weighed between two and five kilograms. The sub-county National Agriculture Advisory Services (NAADS) farmers' forum chairperson, Keith Rwamahe, urged farmers, who own land near wetlands, to start fish farming.
