Aquaculture for all

Algae: Performance and Potential

GERMANY - The second International Algae Congress in Hamburg, Germany on 1-2 December will focus on the performance and potential of photothrophic aquaculture, microalgae, cyanobacteria and microcrops.

It is being organised by the European Society of Microalgal Biotechnology (ESMB), the German DLG e.V. and APP in the Netherlands.

The topic will be addressed from a very international point of view since the speakers represent organisations from a diversity of countries worldwide.

The first congress day will deal with themes such as algae, microcrops - biomass & biofuels. Also production and productivity as well as processing and downstreaming will be handled. The latter session will deal for instance with separation, drying, extraction, high value and by products.

The congress will be opened by Jens Högel, Biotechnologies, Agriculture & Food of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research. During his keynote speech he will speak about phototrophic aquaculture, projects and fundings under the 7th Framework Programme. The next day the themes material balances and integrated systems will be highlighted. This congress day will finish off with a special podium where the ‘Future potential of phototrophic aquaculture’ will be discussed by a selected group of experts.

Over two days the audience will hear viewpoints from many parts of the world since the speakers represent organisations based in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and Israel but also Malaysia, Japan, Saudi Arabia and the United States.

A selection of speakers are Andrew Beck employed at PetroAlgae in the USA and Dr Yoshihiro Shiraiwa, Professor of Plant Physiology & Metabolism at the University of Tsukuba in Japan. Last named professor will speak about ‘fixation of carbon dioxide and the production of biomass, biofuel and biominerals by microalgae’.

The session on material balances includes presentations by for instance Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Kaltschmitt and Michael Kröger. Both speak on behalf of the German DBFZ Leipzig Biomassezentrum on the topic of ‘balancing of algae production and its impact on climate factors’. In the same session, Alexander Döring, European Feed Manufacturers’ Federation (FEFAC) in Belgium will lecture about ‘marketing and use of microalgae as feed – an overview on key EU feed regulatory requirements’.

One of the speakers in the session on integrated systems who will take the floor is Dr. Bernd Kroon, National Prawn Company in Saudi Arabia. He will talk about ‘marine agriculture: phytoplankton, a global resource, leading a global paradigm change towards a sustainable world’.
