Salmon Harvests Predicted to Fall in 2010

CHILE - The chairman of AquaChile, Víctor Hugo Puchi, believes that 2010 is going to be the worst year in terms of salmon harvests in Chile, with expected results between 40,000 and 50,000 tons in its company, representing a third of the current year's projected harvests (150,000 tons).

According to FishFarmingExpert, the most well known Chilean salmon businessman added that if the authority doesn't increase the Appropriate Aquaculture Areas (AAA) it will be impossible for the Chilean salmon industry to take up again the production levels (700,000 tons) prior to the ISA virus crisis.

"If we want to produce in a sustainable way we'll have to settle for 500,000 tons" he said referring to the current conditions. However, he detailed that the industry will remain profitable and is going to surpass the sanitary and productive crisis, regaining its confidence.

Likewise, he criticised the populism of some politicians that have delayed the enactment of the new fisheries regulation.
