Aquaculture in Brazil set to flourish with biosecurity from DAHS

Aquaculture in Brazil set to flourish with biosecurity from DAHS - BRAZIL - With an annual production of 90,000 tons, Brazil is a major world producer of shrimps. However, a recent case of "white spot" in the south of the country highlighted the importance of investment in the control and prevention of shrimp diseases. DuPont Animal Health Solutions

Not seen before in Brazil, the outbreak of "white spot" was a major cause of concern for shrimp producers nationally. The outbreak resulted in a sharp drop in sales, since local production had to be stalled until the problem was remedied, and production in the north, with 96% of national output, was at risk from spread of the disease. Now, however, with the expertise of the DuPont Animal Health Solutions' biosecurity programmes, similar outbreaks in Brazil's aquaculture industry can be prevented.

DuPont's biosecurity operations are based on the provision of Virkon(R) Aquatic, widely used around the world for biosecurity in food production. Virkon(R) Aquatic is independently tested for proven efficacy against a wide range of veterinary pathogens especially viruses, such as "white spot", as well as bacteria, including those affecting shrimp, such as Vibrio spp. Combined with its environmental and safety profile, the efficacy of Virkon(R) Aquatic has made it an excellent tool for aquaculture, aiding the reduction of pathogen challenge and limiting the risk of a disease outbreak. Virkon(R) Aquatic also has the advantage of not altering the quality and the levels of water oxygenation, in addition to maintaining the cultures of phytoplankton that serve as natural food for the shrimps. Currently, Virkon(R) Aquatic and other company products are used in more than 100 countries to protect people, animals and food against diseases such as bird flu and foot and mouth disease.

Following the recent outbreak of "white spot", Brazilian shrimp producers have been seeking advice from DuPont Animal Health Solutions whose global experience in biosecurity is proving valuable to the development of the aquiculture business in Brazil. Mark Blackwell, Aquaculture Global Market Segment Leader at DuPont Animal Health Solutions is enthusiastic about working with Brazil's aquaculture producers, "We are excited by our entry into the growing aquaculture industry and look forward to providing our customers with effective biosecurity solutions for their disease challenges."

DuPont offers producers specific training that is in keeping with global experience gained in areas/territories (Asia isn't a country - sorry to be picky) such as Asia, Brazil's major competitor in the international shrimp market and where Virkon(R) Aquatic has been successfully used. During the training offered to its clients, DuPont will instruct producers about main control measures to minimise the spread of disease. Such procedures range from vehicle disinfection, to the control of the divisions between properties.

To ensure regulatory compliance please read the product label carefully.
