Delta Farmers Get Boost In Technology

Economics +1 more

VIET NAM - Extensive use of technology in agriculture has helped the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta region increase yields.

According to Viet Nam News , since 2005 around 800 different research products and new technologies have been applied, the most successful of which was a new, shorter-term but high-yield rice strain that can be harvested before the annual floods.

By cultivating this variety, the two million ha of land in the region is able to yield 20 million tonnes of rice compared to four million tonnes as recently as in 2005.

The average yield of 5.38 tonnes per hectare is the highest in Southeast Asia. As a result, export of the grain is also sharply up.

Aquaculture is the strength of this region which farms fish and other creatures on 100,000 ha of land. By using micro-organism-based feed, shrimp farmers have achieved remarkable productivity of 15 tonnes per ha.

Now, farmers in the northern and central regions have also begun to use this product.

The Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta region is considered the nation’s food basket, accounting for 52 per cent of the rice grown and 90 per cent of exports.

It also accounts for 80 per cent of Viet Nam’s seafood output and 70 per cent of fruits.
