Crustaceans Environment Breeding & genetics +2 more

MEXICO - A ban on shrimp fishing will become effective as of 31 March 2010 in order to allow the species to continue to breed to ensure stocks for the future.

The ban will be temporary in all marine waters under federal jurisdiction in the Pacific Ocean, including the Gulf of California and in systems Lagunari estuarine marshes and bays of the states of Baja California Sur, Sonora, Sinaloa and Nayarit.

Conapesca - the National Commission for Aquaculture and Fisheries says that the ban is an important fisheries management tool that complements other shrimp regulations on the coast of Pacific Ocean.

The establishment of the closure for the shrimp from the Pacific Ocean aims to contribute to the renewal of stocks, protecting the reproductive process and ensure that recruits generated during the reproductive period sizes acquire higher market value.

If the ban is violated, perpetrators will be penalised according to the General Law on Fisheries and Sustainable Aquaculture.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food through CONAPESCA will announce well in advance, the date of completion of the closure based on the investigations of success.
