US - AquaBounty Techonologies, the company looking to receive Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for the sale of genetically modified (GM)salmon, has recieved notification to say that it has progressed to the next (and near-final) stage in the approval process.

The company was informed by the Centre for Veterinary Medecine of the FDA, of its intention to discuss and make a recommendation regarding the approval at a meeting of the Veterinary Medecine Advisory Committe (VMAC) on 19-20 September 2010.

In addition, the FDA will hold a public hearing, on 21 September, on the application of its food labeling requirements and how they might apply to AquAdvantage Salmon (AquaBounty's GM salmon).

This fish would be the first transgenic animal to approved by FDA for human consumption.

A company spokesperson said: "The holding of the VMAC meeting represents a key milestone in the approval process, which is now nearing completion."
