CHINA - The carcinogenic industrial dye Malachite Green has been found in live eels and eel products recently imported from China. The National Fisheries Product Quality Inspection Service said Sunday tests on 25 shipments of live eels imported from China between the end of last month and early this month detected the toxin in four shipments amounting to 10 tons.
The Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) also announced on July 26 that a preliminary investigation of 291 tons of spiced and sushi-use eel found the toxin in 32 of 38 shipments.
The Chinese government says use of Malachite Green, which is used as a disinfectant on fish farms, has been banned since 2002, but a nation-wide crackdown in June revealed that it was still being used in some provinces.
