Forum Focuses On Environmental Issues

CHINA - On 10-12 October 2010, the Forum on Fishery Science and Technology sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences (CAFS) was successfully held in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province under the theme of Fishery Environmental Evaluation and Ecological Rehabilitation.

It was attended by over 230 experts and scholars from over 50 research and teaching institutions of a number of countries and international organizations, including China, the US, Japan, ROK, Greece, Russia, the Philippines, FAO and the WorldFish Center.

Zhang Xianliang, President of CAFS, noted in his opening remarks that due to the industrial structure featuring high energy consumption and serious pollution, economic development had made a major impact on the ecosystems including the aquatic ecosystems, a main part of the Earth’s biosphere.

In the face of increasingly acute environmental problems, it is of great practical significance for promotion of economic development in harmony with the environment to strengthen the monitoring and research on fishery ecosystems and scientifically devise the measures for conservation of fishery ecosystems.

In recent years, the Chinese researchers have made some important progress through diversified research activities on the technologies for ecosystem rehabilitation and solution to some tricky issues.

At the forum, 15 experts gave keynote presentations, including Tang Qisheng, Honorary President of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Meng Wei, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Hans W. Paerl, Professor from the Center for Marine Science of University of North Carolina of the US, Shinsuke Tanabe, Professor from the Center for Marine Environment Studies of Ehime Universityof Japan, and Sena De Silva, Director General of the Network of Aquaculture Centers in Asia-Pacific (NACA).

The participants conducted extensive discussion and exchange on five topics, i.e. application of bio-indicators in environmental monitoring; environmental evaluation, origin identification and quality control technologies for fishery products; ecological impact of large hydraulic engineering projects on fisheries; manipulation and rehabilitation on aquatic environment; and impact of climate change on fishery ecological security.
