US - The attentive crowd at a special March 21 conference session during the International Boston Seafood Show heard a panel of experts from the United States, China, Malaysia and Chile address the major changes in global seafood markets that will soon face the aquaculture industry.

During “Averting an Impending Seafood Shortage: Building on the Insights of GOAL 2010,” representatives of international aquaculture companies, producer groups and retailers shared strategic views on aquaculture supply and demand around the world. Attendees also learned about new pro-aquaculture policies in the United States and a new sustainable seafood policy announced by Walmart and Sam’s Club that incorporates Best Aquaculture practices certification.

As reported at Global Outlook for Aquaculture Leadership 2010 in Malaysia, unanticipated surge in per-capita seafood consumption in Asia is leading to unprecedented demand that can only be met by aquaculture. A main purpose for the session was to explore ideas on how the varied elements of the aquaculture industry can work together to prepare for a future with much higher seafood demand.

This special session was sponsored by the Global Aquaculture Alliance and Diversified Business Communications, and moderated by GAA Executive Director Wally Stevens.
