Forum On Marine Spatial Planning

Sustainability +1 more

US - The World Ocean Council (WOC) is planning to hold a national forum on Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) in Washington DC from the 13- 14 July 2011. The aim is to help unite and develop business involvement in US Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning (CMSP).

The CMSP will be run through the US established National Ocean Council (NOC). They will be implementing and introducing CMSP through nine regional programmes. A three day National Workshop is also planned to be held in late June where government agencies will be developing the CMSP's strategic action plan.

The National Business Forum on CDSP is crucial to promote the sustainable use of marine space and its resources.
Its main objectives are:

  • To create an understanding of CMSP and of the proposed process and plans
  • Identify the potential business impacts and benefits of CMSP
  • Create a business community strategy for working with CMSP

CMSP is defined by the Task Force as “a comprehensive, adaptive, integrated, and transparent spatial planning process, based on sound science, for analysing current and anticipated uses of ocean, coastal, and Great Lakes areas.

CMSP identifies areas most suitable for various types or classes of activities in order to reduce conflicts among uses, reduce environmental impacts, facilitate compatible uses, and preserve critical ecosystem services to meet economic, environmental, security, and social objectives”. CMSP seeks to move sea use planning “away from the current sector-by-sector, statute by statute approach” according to the Task Force information.
