Sustainability Politics

MEXICO and ARGENTINA - In the presence of the Argentinian and Mexican presidents, Mexican and Argentinian officials signed a co-operation agreement for the exchange of knowledge, information and experiences in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.

In order to strengthen ties of cooperation in agriculture and fisheries, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food of Mexico and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fishing of Argentina signed two cooperation agreements on primary production, technological innovation, rural development, value addition and marketing.

The fisheries and aquaculture agreement will be valid for two years and has, as a main objective, established the basis for cooperation that will allow both countries to increase and facilitate the implementation of projects and programmes.

This collaboration will include areas of marine fisheries, aquaculture, management and conservation of fishery resources and aquatic product processing, amongst others.

The agreement will assist both countries in exchanging data and information related to sustainable use of fisheries resources and aquaculture.

Specifically, this agreement will allow the exchange of information and technology in the techniques of catching, processing, distribution, transportation and marketing of fishery and aquaculture products and the promotion and strengthening of relations between fisheries research institutions from both countries.

The document also sets research activities in fisheries and aquaculture, which includes a joint assessment of scientific resources and the sharing of resources, particularly that of the experts and government officials.

Similarly, it includes the promotion and encouragement of cooperation between the private sectors of both countries in the areas of fisheries and subsectors, and in aquaculture.

As part of the state visit by the President of Argentina, Mexican President Felipe Caldern said that the signing of these agreements begins a new stage of cooperation between both nations.

He added that the aim of strengthening ties of cooperation with countries is to meet the new challenges we face globally, such as climate change.

In its participation, the President of Argentina stressed the fact that it is the first time the two countries have a level of closeness and warmth, like the one generated by the signing of these agreements.
