Northern Prawn Fishing Season Ends On A High

Its been a phenomenal season for prawns. We expect the final catch to be near a massive 7,000 tonnes of Banana Prawns in the 2011 season with the Tiger Prawn season still to come, said Dr James Findlay, Chief Executive Officer of AFMA.

This is the best catch in over 10 years and around 1,500 tonnes more than last year, so there are plenty of Banana Prawns available for Australian consumers right now."

AFMA and industry have worked together to ensure a sustainable fishery that provides healthy and delicious seafood that Australians enjoy and rely on year after year."

This fisherys performance is a testament to AFMAs and the Commonwealth fishermens hard work and good management. The seasons favourable fishing conditions have placed the cherry on top.

While the wild weather in the early months of the year caused devastation and hardship in many parts of Northern Australia, record rainfall swelled the rivers feeding the Gulf and in turn produced large numbers of good quality prawns.

Australians can be confident when they buy Australian seafood, like prawns from the environmental award winning Northern Prawn Fishery, that they are buying a sustainable healthy product, Dr Findlay concluded.
