GLOBAL - The University of St Andrews is soon to launch an online Postgraduate Diploma/ MSc in Sustainable Aquaculture. With the European Commission announcing reforms for the Common Fisheries Policy last week, there is an ever increasing focus on the sustainable production of seafood.

The first module of the online course, which is hosted by TheFishSite.com, gives students an overview of Aquaculture and Fisheries and their sustainability options.

Jonathan David and Neil Hazon (lecturers at St Andrews University) say: “The domestication of numerous plants and animals and the development of modern techniques has meant that aquaculture has the potential to provide human needs in a sustainable fashion.

"Aquaculture can thrive in degraded environments and can provide a range of environmental services, including water purification, waste treatment, rebuilding depleted fish stocks and control of human disease vectors."

The first module of this course examines the methods and species involved in aquaculture and how this practice impacts upon the environment, society and global markets.

Particular emphasis is placed upon the impacts that aquaculture has on fisheries and how sustainable aquaculture can reduce pressures on wild fish stocks. Marine capture fisheries output peaked in 1990, and this has been declining ever since. This shortfall has been made up by aquaculture, which in 2009 contributed 45 per cent of all aquatic production.
