MEXICO - National fisheries organisations have agreed to the opening of the shrimp catch season in the Gulf of Mexico from today, 16 August.

The National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA), the National Fisheries Institute (INAPESCA) and representatives of the National Chamber of the Fishing Industry (CANAINPESCA) agreed to the opening.

Based on studies conducted by specialists from the Regional Fisheries Research Center of Tamaulipas and Veracruz, which indicate that 80 per cent of the product has the right size for extraction, we determined the start date of the lobster fishery, which for the season will generate more than 500,000 jobs in the region.

In order to promote development and conservation of the species, fisheries authorities and representatives of producers to promote responsible fisheries determined during the fishing season, which ends 30 April at sea and in late May in the lagoon systems.

This season the fishing effort will include 270 shrimp boats equipped with Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs), thereby giving effect to the regulations to protect the turtles while fishing for crab.

The expected capture volume of more than 11,000 tons of shrimp, allows sufficient availability of the species to meet the demand of domestic market and export.

Since 1993, fisheries authorities have established closed seasons to catch shrimp in order to encourage their development and reproduction, which has kept the fishing activity in the region in sustainable conditions.

Monitoring of fishing activities are carried out CONAPESCA, in coordination the Navy Department, which monitors compliance with the standards established for this fishery.
