Govt Welfare Committee Seeks New Expertise

Welfare Politics +2 more

UK - Applications are invited for members of the Farm Animal Welfare Committee (FAWC) with expertise in animal slaughter, fish farming, pig and deer farming.

The FAWC was established by Defra earlier this year. It was set up to provide independent, impartial advice on the welfare of farmed animals and the legislative changes that might be necessary to protect them.

FAWC invites experts join them to improve standards of animal welfare and ensure a secure, environmentally sustainable and healthy supply of food.

The organisation is looking to recruit the following five experts to share their knowledge:

  • an expert in the commercial and engineering aspects of slaughter and killing
  • an expert in the science of slaughter and killing
  • fish farming expert
  • pig veterinarian, and
  • deer farming expert.

Whatever your field of expertise, you will have the chance to inform the Committee's thinking with your advice. You will challenge and scrutinise current and proposed practices; working with a mix of people from different backgrounds and with different perspectives.

As well as in-depth knowledge of your subject, you will need the ability to understand other points of view, build productive relationships and express yourself clearly. You should also be a creative and analytical thinker, who can formulate advice. Above all, you must care about the welfare of animals and the way they are farmed.

The time commitment is 15 to 20 days per year and a daily fee of 148 plus expenses is available.

For a full information pack and application form, please contact the FAWC Secretariat (fawcsecretariat@defra.gsi.gov.uk or 020 7238 5016/6340). The deadline for receipt of applications is 12 noon on 23 September 2011.
