Shrimp Catch Reopens In The Pacific

MEXICO - Producers and fisheries authorities have agreed that the ban on shrimp catches will end on 7 September 2011.

The opening of the catching season will be in stages, catching the species in the lagoon systems, marshes and bays and the Pacific Ocean.

A meeting earlier this month, about shrimp catches, was attended by the National Fisheries and Aquaculture, the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA) and the National Fisheries Institute (INAPESCA), representatives of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture (CANAIPESCA) and groups of fishermen among others.

They determined that the capture periods should be made under a scheme for sustainable fishing to ensure the continuity of jobs.

The following dates and times were decided for the gradual opening of the shrimp catch:

From 6:00 am on 7 September 2011 in the estuarine lagoon systems, marshes and bays of Sonora and Sinaloa (from the border state of Sonora to the north boundary of the Bay of Ceuta), and in estuarine lagoon systems located in the municipality of Escuinapa, those located in the states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima and Baja California Sur.

From 6:00 am on 15 September 15, in the lagoon system and Huizache-Caimanero Chametla, municipality of El Rosario, Sinaloa.

From 6:00 am on 20 September in coastal marine waters of the Pacific Ocean including the Gulf of California from its northern limit at the US border to the southern limit of the state of Nayarit in the parallel 20 ° 40 'North, the marine waters of the Buffer Zone of Biosphere Reserve of the Upper Gulf of California and Colorado River Delta.

An exception is the marine band comprised of five to 13 fathoms from the port of Mazatlan, Sinaloa, following an imaginary line to the west on the parallel 23 ° 11 'north to the southern boundary of the state of Nayarit the parallel 20 ° 40 'north.

From 6:00 am on 27 September, from south boundary of the state of Nayarit to the border with the Republic of Guatemala, including the region of five to thirteen fathoms from the port of Mazatlan to the southern limit Nayarit.

During the meeting at the headquarters of INAPESCA, the results of the observer programme on board in charge of (fidem), and the results of research on the fishery (supported by regional fishery biological studies and environmental analysis) and particular technical recommendations of the Institute, based on which defined dates for the establishment of fishing by geographical area, were presented.

In the workshop, the president of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture and Director General of Land Aquaculture CONAPESCA, Hilario Perez Figueroa, welcomed the agreement reached by all parties to maintain the sustainability of fisheries resources.

In turn, the Director General of Inspection and Surveillance (CONAPESCA), Rigoberto Garcia Soto, urged representatives to promote respect for the regulations for the new fishing season.
