Authorities Promise To Fight Aquaculture Pollution

AUSTRALIA - The Primary Industries Department again has promised to address pollution from aquaculture off Eyre Peninsula in South Australia.

ABCNews reports that some residents have complained about debris including plastic and rope from ventures such as fish feedlots.

A delegation of industry representatives has visited one landowner who recently collected 134 kilograms of debris over a fortnight.

Primary Industries said back in 2008 it would use education and peer pressure to address the problem.

Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy, Sean Sloan, says part of the plan involves improving management practices.

"There's no doubt there's an issue there, that's why we've moved to try and address it," he said.

"But at the same time we need to acknowledge that the industry groups involved are doing a lot already."
