Catch Landings Reached 1.73 Million Tonnes

VIET NAM - In August 2011, catch landings estimated at 254 thousand MT, bringing the total catch volume in the first eight months of 2011 to 1,730 thousand MT, up nearly one per cent over the same period of 2010 in which marine catch reached 1,619 thousand MT.

VASEP reports that high landings are reported in the provinces in south central region thanks to favourable weather conditions for off-shore fishing. In the provinces of the Southern region including Bac Lieu province, after an off-shore fishing trip, a vessel can earn VND six to eight million or even VND10 million per day.

In the past eight months, provinces reported high catch landings included Binh Dinh 95,300 MT (in which tuna output reached 3,870 MT, up 13.82 per cent on that of the same period of 2010), Binh Thuan 112,410 MT, Ba Ria-Vung Tau 181,512 MT, Kien Giang 268,237 MT, Ca Mau 106,364 MT.

Aquaculture production in the first eight months of 2011 continues to expand.

In August 2011, aquaculture production reached 282 thousand MT, bringing the total aquaculture production in the past eight months to 1,845 thousand MT, up 5.3 per cent on that of the same period of 2010 in which pangasius output reported 704.7 thousand MT.

Provinces reported high farmed pangasius production included Dong Thap 208.8 thousand MT, An Giang 157.2 thousand MT, Can Tho 99.1 thousand MT, Ben Tre 85 thousand MT, Vinh Long 78.7 thousand MT.
