MEXICO - The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), with the support of the Humid Tropics (PTH) and the National Fisheries Institute (INAPESCA) is promoting technology transfer and validation in aquaculture production units.

Technology transfer and validation is being promoted in four of the nine states of the country that make up the region where the programme operates in order to increase aquaculture production, encouraging greater competitiveness and higher incomes for producers.

In accordance with the provisions of the Framework Convention on Capacity Development, Technological Innovation and rural extension, the PTH allocated more than six million pesos to develop research projects focused on specialised technical assistance for better utilisation of species of commercial importance.

Under the agreement, SAGARPA will produce a catalog of innovative technologies for the aquaculture industry in the regions established as the "Wet Tropics" (Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan, Chiapas, Puebla, Oaxaca, Guerrero and Quintana Roo), which promotes competitive and profitable production of the various species that are grown in the area.

The document also notes that INAPESCA and Shared Risk Trust Fund (FIRCO) support the development of technology for the reproduction of sea cucumber on fish farms.

The institute's specialists will analyse and validate the technology involved in the process of fattening the fish Pargo Canan (OcyurusChrysurus) that occurs in Dzilam de Bravo, Yucatan.

Under the agreement, Santa Maria Huitepec producers in the southern mountains of Oaxaca receive expert advice and training to use photoperiod technology, implemented by INAPESCA for the reproduction of trout eggs off-season (this is done successfully in fish farms of the State of Mexico, Hidalgo and Chihuahua).

Additionally, Tabasco, Centla and Comalcalco, will assess the growth of juvenile snook in captivity in order to validate the technology used for the fattening of this species whose population has declined through overfishing.

Thus, aquaculture is an important alternative to minimise the effects of overfishing and ensure availability of product markets, and the conservation of sources of employment.

Through the agreement, the culture of American oysters, a species of commercial importance, in Tabasco will be boosted. This is also in support of fishing groups and cooperatives located in the producing areas of the entity.

They provide technical assistance to devil fish processing, that occurs in Chiapas and Tabasco. The objective here is to train them in appropriate fishing gear and in the potential use and management of the species.

In the producing area of Sisal and Yucatan, the PTH and INAPESCA also support a project aimed at women/ wives of fishermen.

Here, women will receive training and technical assistance in order to provide self-employment alternatives to enable them to improve their income.
