Season Starts For Offshore Shrimp Fishery In Pacific

MEXICO - The National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA) reported that as of Tuesday 20 September the fishing season for shrimp in coastal marine waters of the Pacific Ocean including the Gulf of California is re-open.

The shrimp fishery is important as during its open period it generates more than 8,500 direct jobs resulting from the operations of the fleet at sea, and over 4,000 in the work being done on land.

The area of the shrimp fishery in the Pacific stretches from its northern boundary at the US border to the southern boundary of the state of Nayarit (in the parallel of 20 40'N), including the marine waters of the Zone Damping of the Biosphere Reserve of the Upper Gulf of California and Colorado River Delta.

Also, from the 27 September, the shrimp fishing season will open in coastal marine waters of the Pacific Ocean from the southern boundary of the state of Nayarit, to the border with the Republic of Guatemala, as well as marine strip comprised of five at 13 fathoms from Mazatlan, Sinaloa, following an imaginary line to the west (on the parallel 23 11'N) to the southern boundary of the state of Nayarit (in the parallel of 20 40 'N).

Currently, domestic production of shrimp is distributed in the domestic and the international market. The shrimp products available are frozen, fresh, breaded, canned, heading and dry powder.

The main squares in which the national shrimp markets are located are; Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla and Cancun, as well as tourist areas of the beach.

Among export destinations of domestic production are the United States, Canada and Spain .
