2010 Aquaculture Employment & Production Declined

Economics +1 more

SPAIN - Aquaculture production in Spain fell by 9.4 per cent in volume in 2010, to 43,888 tons. Aquaculture employment also decreased 11 per cent.

Aquaculture production also declined 1.78 per cent in value. This decrease was driven by the economic crisis and bureaucratic complications, according Apromar, one of the associations of private sector firms.

Last year, the sector also had a job loss of 11.7 per cent.

In accordance with the EFE, Spanish aquaculture is "suffering" from increasing pressure from the influx of imports of fish such as pangasius and Nile perch, and the unfair competition from countries where health or labour requirements are lower than those of the European Union.

The organisations representing the aquaculture sector stated that this problem increases the crisis of the activity in Spain, both in the financial landscape and through the obstacles that hinder their growth.
