Conapesca Promotes New Fish Species Consumption

Sustainability Economics +3 more

MEXICO - Conapesca is promoting the consumption of Plecostomus (sucker fish) due to its versatility, high nutritional value and Omega 3.

When processed to obtain flour, this species also has a high biological quality and it can be used as an ingredient to formulate several aquaculture diets.

Conapesca is promoting its capture in order to take advantage of the invasive species.

Also involved is SAGARPA, who is working alongside scientific and private sectors as well as the Federal Government.

According to the Mexican Official Standard NOM-027-PESC-2000, there are regulations to exploit these fish resources and Plecostomus is included in order to let the fishermen capture it for commercial purposes.

At the same time, it is a way to control its population and keep the ecological balance on aquatic environment.

This initiative is supported by scientific researches as Alternative use of Plecostomus in Tierra Caliente region (Michoacn)." This study emphasises that the species has 20 per cent of its body available for meat.

Once its skin is removed; the fish meat can be cooked in many different ways.

Chilean researchers carried out a chemical assessment on Plecostomus flour quality, aiming to reduce production costs and to increase aquaculture feed efficiency.

Researchers concluded that it has a high biological quality and it can be used as an ingredient to formulate several aquaculture diets.
