Crustaceans Health Biosecurity +3 more

HAWAII, US - An outbreak of white spot disease has been reported to the OIE on 24 October 2011, by Dr John Clifford, Deputy Administrator, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, United States Department of Agriculture, Washington, United States of America.

The outbreak occured at a salt water farm in Kauai, HAWAII

The outbreak effected a defined zone within the country and has been resolved.

So far, the outbreak has a mortality and morbidity of one on a scale of zero to five.

Control measures applied include:

  • Movement control inside the country
  • Quarantine
  • Vaccination prohibited
  • No treatment of affected animals

Measures to be applied:

  • Stamping out
  • Disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s)

On 1 October 2011 divers noted a small increase in mortality in shrimp in a few of the ponds in the meat shrimp production facility. Shrimp were collected and sent in for laboratory disease testing.

The Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA) placed a quarantine order on the movement of shrimp from the farm on Kauai and is currently conducting an epidemiologic investigation of the event.

The company has separate brood stock compartments of the operation that are located over two km away. These brood stock facilities continue to have strict biosecurity practices and disease testing procedures that include white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) in place. These practices and testing procedures have been effective in preventing the introduction of WSSV and other agents throughout the brood stock operations history.

Sampling and testing of the brood stock facility was conducted the week of 17 October 2011 and 90 days previously all testing was negative for WSSV. The current WSSV event only involves the meat shrimp production facility. The brood stock operation is not affected.
