EU Commissioner To Discuss CFP Reform

23 November 2011

SWEDEN - European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Maria Damanaki will be in Stockholm today (November 23) to present the reform of the EU's Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and discuss specific aspects of the Commission's proposal with Swedish stakeholders.

The new policy aims at preserving fish stocks at sustainable levels for the benefit of current and future generations by managing fisheries in a responsible, science-based way.

The Commissioner will speak on the phasing out of discards at the conference "Renewal of the EU Fisheries Policy – minimised by-catch and ban on discards" at the Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences, where she will also hold a press conference with Minister for Rural Affairs Mr Eskil Erlandson and Norwegian Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs Ms Lisbeth Berg-Hansen. Among the issues under discussion are the views of Sweden on practical aspects of discards and the importance of discards in Norwegian fishing.

During her visit, Commissioner Damanaki will also meet the three biggest environmental organisations in Sweden (WWF, the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation and Greenpeace Sweden) to discuss the CFP Reform and fishing in the Baltic Sea.

The visit will conclude at the Swedish Parliament Committee of Agriculture and Fisheries, where, after a brief address by the Commissioner, the main issues of the CFP Reform will be debated with a special focus on discards, regionalisation, fishing concessions, external policy and future bilateral agreements.
