VIET NAM - Annually, Viet Nam catches around two million tonnes (MT) of marine fish with 130,000 fishing fleets including 20,000 offshore fishing vessels and 110,000 inshore fishing vessels. With fish stocks gradually deteriorating, the government plans to cooperate and expand fishing ground.

Apart from the Viet Nam - China Agreement on Fishing Co-operation in the Gulf of Tonkin, Viet Nam has recently signed many other Fisheries Cooperation Agreements with other countries such as Agreement of Fisheries Cooperation with the Phillipines, Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Livestock and Fisheries Cooperation with Myanmar and the MoU on Marine and Fisheries Cooperation with Indonesia.

In time, Viet Nam will strengthen and cooperate with many other countries on fish capturing.

Vietnam will also cooperate with Indonesia due to the high demand of fish capturing in the area.

On the 14 Nov 2011, the Directorate of Fisheries held a workshop with Indonesia on cooperation regarding fish catching and processing, with an aim to; introduce processors and fishermen to the procedures of catching fish in foreign fishing grounds and investment regulations in the Indonesian fisheries industry.

In the future, Viet Nam will expand its fishing grounds with plentiful fish stocks in Sri Lanka, Southern India, Myanmar, Cambodia and Africa.
