Heavy Metals In Shellfish Still High

AUSTRALIA - The latest report from the Derwent Estuary Organisation shows that there are still high levels of heavy metals present in shellfish in the Derwent estuary.

Over the past decade there has been much improvement in reducing the heavy metals present through sewage and industrial waste treatment.

However, the report states that although levels have dropped since 2003, Oysters and mussels still contain high levels of heavy metals, particularly zinc, lead and cadmium, far in excess of national food standards.

It is suggested that shellfish and bream should not be eaten if collected from the site.
