Pressure To Control PD Outbreaks

23 December 2011

ANALYSIS - Outbreaks of pancreas disease (PD) outside the PD zone in Norway are putting increasing pressure and the government to control the disease.

This month, pancreas disease (PD) was diagnosed outside Norway's PD zone. This has come as a massive shock to the industry and the veterinary authority. PD is one of the most economically damaging diseases present in the industry.

PD is caused by a virus called salmonid alphavirus and is detected in Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout.

The disease is regularly detected within the PD zone, however outbreaks out of the PD zone are treated seriously in an attempt to stop the virus spreading.

Earlier this month, Leroy Seafood Group announced that traces of PD were found in some fish during a routine check in its subsidiary group - Leroy Hydrotech.

Within a couple of days PD was found at a number of other sites, a Leroy site in Nord-Møre and a SalMar site in Sør-Trøndelag.

Following on from this, the Food Safety Authority began testing all farms in the infected areas. It is determined to not let the disease spread North of Hustadvika.

There were speculations that the movement of wrasse from one of Leroy's locations within the PD zone was to do with PD outbreaks outside the area. However the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (FSA) has ruled this out, but have nevertheless cautioned the Leroy farm.

The fisheries and aquaculture industry is continuing its strategy to keep Hustadvika as a barrier against PD. The first cases of PD were recorded in Bergen in 1989. It has long been located down the South West coast, and despite efforts to contain the disease it has spread North.

The PD zone compromises of Rogaland, Hordaland and parts of Møre and Romsdal. Up to date there has only been isolated outbreaks of PD in Nordland and Troms.
