Suspicion of PD in Tromsø Fish Farms

18 January 2012

NORWAY - The Breeding and Veterinary Department notified the Food Safety Authority on the 13 January of suspicion of Pancreas Disease (PD) at the site in Troms, Tromsø.

Suspect samples were submitted to the Institute for investigation following increased mortality at the site.

"To prevent the spread of the infection locality restrictions have been imposed including the prohibition against moving fish without special permission," said district chief Arne Mjøs.

The site is now isolated from other farming activities. In total there are around two million fish at the site in eight cages. The fish were put into the sea in autumn 2011.

The nearest localities are Sjurelv Aquaculture AS which is 16 km away and Tromsø Aquaculture Research Station, which is 17 km away.
