Alliance Select Increase Profits with Salmon

25 January 2012

PHILIPPINES - Alliance Select Foods International Inc. expects salmon products to contribute 25 per cent of its sales this year following the expansion of the company.

The Malaya reports that last year, Alliance Select bought a salmon business in the United States and commissioned a local facility.

"Last year is much less than that because we acquired the US processing plant only in August. Plus the plant in GenSan started only in August," said Rajat Balain, Alliance Select corporate information officer.

The company is now the largest producer in Southeast Asia at four metric tons per day and has added new customers.

"There are a couple of salmon producers in Thailand, and there is one in Indonesia. But our combined capacity in New Zealand, the US, and General Santos City of about four metric tons per day could make it the biggest," said Mr Balain.

Most of the company’s produce in New Zealand and the US are for domestic consumption while output in the Gensan facility is exported.

Alliance Select last week informed the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) that it has added new names to its list of smoked salmon customers in the US.

"We are pleased to inform you that Spence and Co. (Spence), Alliance Select Foods International Inc.’s US-based subsidiary, has been selected as the sole supplier for the entire Wellsley Farms’ smoked salmon product line. These products will be sold in BJ’s club stores. BJ’s is a membership warehouse retailer with 190 locations in 15 states on the US East Coast," Alliance Select said.

"In addition, Spence has also added Costco’s North West division to its roster of clients. Costco is the largest membership clubhouse chain in North America with 592 locations in the US and Mexico. The subsidiary has also made a concerted effort to increase its client base and has recently added online retailers like Mackenzie Ltd. (one of the largest purveyors of US and imported smoked salmon and specialty smoked seafood products) and Vermont County Store (purveyors of practical and hard to find products)," it added.

Spence has drawn up aggressive marketing plans that will be implemented this year with the goal to further expand its distribution network across the US, according to Alliance Select.

Alliance Select said smoked salmon "will continue to be a major growth driver for Alliance in the few years."

"The company’s subsidiary in General Santos, Big Glory Bay Salmon and Seafood Company Inc. (BGB), is also stepping up its exports with repeat orders from leading retailers and distributors in Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore," it said.

BGB was recently given certification to export salmon to South Korea.
