Crab Growth Increased with Fresh Mussel Diet
20 February 2012SPAIN - A study led by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography has discovered that juvenile crabs grow more when fed on fresh mussels rather than frozen mussels.
Researchers at the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), the Institute of
Agricultural Research and Training and Pesquera de Andalucía (IFAPA) and the
National Autonomous University of Mexico have recently published in the journal
Aquaculture Research the results of an experiment on the diet of the crab
(Maja brachydactyla).
The experiment compared the growth and biochemical composition of
two groups of crabs: one which was fed with frozen mussels and the other with
fresh mussels.
The researchers observed a significantly higher growth in the
crabs which were fed with fresh mussels. The crabs average weight increased more than 300 grams, while those fed frozen mussels only increased their weight by about 70 grams.
However, no appreciable differences in the biochemical composition
of either group was found.
The researchers also found that growth differences were significant in the
younger individuals, up to two months. In crabs five months of age,
weight difference between those fed fresh and those fed frozen mussels were
negligible.
