BAR and Worldfish Center Boost Aquaculture
21 February 2012PHILIPPINES - The Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) and the WorldFish Center are collaborating on a project to enhance the capacity of stakeholders to commercialise aquaculture technology.
ManilaBulletin reports that BAR and the Los Baños-based WorldFish Center sealed an agreement recently to work on the “Aquaculture Technology Commercialisation and Awareness Programme (AQUATECH) in the Philippines Capacity Building Project.”
Recently, BAR director Dr Nicomedes P. Eleazar presided over the pre-implementation meeting of the two agencies in Quezon City.
Dr Eleazar said the Department of Agriculture (DA) is allotting a budget to establish income-generating and technology-developing agriculture and fisheries research stations all over the country.
A key player in the development of aquaculture technology in the country in the Tigbauan, Iloilo-based Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC), which has already institutionalized hatchery operations for inland breeding of various marine species.
