BFAR-7 Conducts Experimental Test Blast Fishing
22 February 2012PHILIPPINES - The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources for Central Visayas Region (BFAR-7) will conduct an experimental test blast fishing on 24 February, 2012 at BFAR-7 Regional Fisheries and Development Center in Calape, Bohol.
BFAR-7 assistant regional director Allan Poquita revealed that the main objective of this experiment is to determine the impact of blast fishing at the different development stages of fishes as well as the various damages caused by blast fishing.
Mr Poquita further disclosed that the blast fishing experimentation aims to achieve stricter measures and policies on the prohibition of fishing with the use of explosives.
“We are hoping to come up with policies and measures and more administrative memorandum that will define the illegality of blast fishing,” Mr Poquita said.
Experimental test blast fishing will be conducted in a controlled area-a two hectare fishpond inside Fisheries and Development Center in Calape with fishes of various stages form eggs to larvae, fry, and fingerlings, juvenile and adult up to marketable sizes, Mr Poquita explained.
“Fish will be placed in” hapa” nets inside the pond and lined up at various distances from the blast site,” he added.
This will be undertaken with the presence of BFAR National Director Atty. Asis Perez and representatives from StateUniversities and Colleges, LGU, PNP and fisher folk leaders.
Since this a BFAR national project in which BFAR-7 is the chosen host, all regional directors from the various region in the country will be expected to witness the experimentation.
BFAR 7, ARD Poquita that the experimentation will only take a short time but they will have to analyse the fishes used in the experimentation.
Mr Poquita said that these fishes will be dissected for internal and external manifestation in order to determine the extent of damages brought by blast fishing.
Safety and security is also observed in the test blasting since this is properly coordinated with the Firearms and Explosives Division of the Regional PNP as well as LGU in Bohol.
