Lobster Labelling Plan Put Forward to Boost Population

06 July 2012

NORWAY - The Directorate of Fisheries is proposing to prohibit the sale of wild-caught lobster which have not been labelled. The proposal has now been sent out with a deadline set for 22 August 2012.

The Fisheries and Coastal Affairs department has asked the Directorate to submit proposals for consultation on certain adjustments and new regulatory measures that may contribute to the strengthening of the lobster population.

One of the measures is the tagging of lobsters.

For this to take place, lobsters must be marked before the season starts on 1 October.

Other measures that the Ministry proposed were; regulation of lobster fishing in closed seasons, depth limits for crab pots, general vehicle ban in shallow water and escape gaps in pots.

New rules on these points will not be effective until 2013.

The deadline for the proposed scheme is set to 22 August 2012.
