20 July 2012

ECUADOR - The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries (MAGAP), through the Directorate of Artisanal Fisheries of the Department of Fishing Resources, is training members of the artisanal fishing cooperatives in the province of Santa Elena, Esmeraldas and El Oro in the Programme for Strengthening and Microenterprise artisanal fisheries.

The Undersecretary of Fisheries, Jimmy Martinez Ortiz, said that through this process the programme "seeks to ensure family support and contribute to the development of their communities through the implementation of projects to strengthen micro-enterprise through the provision of working tools for their productive activity."

In the province of Esmeraldas communities benefit from the canton Eloy Alfaro and Muisne.

Here, fishermen are using new techniques for the conservation of fishery products, which aims to improve their production and income.

One hundred and fifty fishermen in this province developed skills and abilities on gear handling, storage, administration and other topics.

Artisanal Fisheries Director, Gladys Cedeño Marcillo, said that in the province of Santa Elena, parish Chanduy community, fishermen were equipped with boats and motors. With the delivery of these tools, fishermen will improve their fishing capacity and increase demand in the markets. This work benefited 57 families.

Mr Cedeño said that in the province of El Oro, a project to improve marketing, with the implementation of a fishing facility to be equipped with a holding room product freezing tunnel and a camera for the production of flake ice, was developed.

This project will benefit 5,200 fishermen in the area. Finally, he said that in Port Bolivar an ice plant for the conservation of fishery products has been created.
